Ramapo for Children offers college students a valuable and highly unique summer job experience through one of our programs: Camp Ramapo. Ramapo runs one of the few residential summer camps that specifically serves children with social, emotional, and learning challenges. At our camp, staff members believe that all children want to succeed, and embrace the challenges of working with special needs children. Many of our staff alumni describe their work at Ramapo as having been a formative experience, and have gone on to be teachers, psychologists, social workers, organization directors, and even founders of national service nonprofits.

Camp Ramapo has a one-to-one staff-to-camper ratio that not only helps children who need more supervision and support, but also provides staff members with the intensive, hands-on experience that they need to grow professionally.

Staff members receive the same state-of-the-art training that we provide to teachers and other youth-service professionals already working in the field. CAMP FACILITIES: Our camper living facilities are beautiful modern cabins, all of which have wood flooring, pine walls, windows, air-conditioning and ceiling and attic fans. Modern updated bathrooms, replete with private shower and toilet stalls, are housed within the cabins. The bunks are spacious with separate rooms to store our camper's clothing. The cabins are air-conditioned and have state of the art sprinkler systems, metal-encased electrical conduit, ARC-fault breakers, fire extinguishers, smoke detectors and new hot water heaters.

CAMP FACILITIES: At 200 feet, the Oliver Hazard Perry is the first ocean-going full-rigged ship to be built in the U.S. in over 100 years. It is the largest civilian sail training vessel in America. She has berths for 49 people overnight, and with 17 crew, a low camper to crew ratio creates a safe and fun environment. The ship is equipped with a steel hull, 3 masts, with square sails on all three masts, 20 sails totaling 14,000 square feet, and 7 miles of rope and wire. The engines run on a bio-diesel blend, and the ship is equipped with a modern galley (on-board kitchen), central air, an on-deck science lab, a library and wheel-chair accessibility above and below decks.

CAMP PROGRAM INFO: With 17 professional crew and a capacity for 30-34 campers, our program promotes a dynamic and safe learning environment with a 2:1 ratio of campers to instructors. Campers will feel the thrill of steering a 500-ton ship, and learn to work the yards and sails while exploring the beautiful coasts of New England. They will learn safety at sea and perform important safety drills while acquiring skills in navigation, seamanship, sail handling, knots, and the language of the boat. Campers will explore the underwater world through snorkeling. They will understand wind, waves, tides and the ecology of sandy and rocky seashores. Sunsets, sunrises and the night sky will serve as the backdrop for this incredible experience, in addition to marine phosphorescence, dolphins and whales. Teamwork is an integral part of success onboard the boat, and in addition to learning about themselves, and achieving things they never imagined, they will make friendships to last a lifetime.

CAMP LEADERSHIP CIT/LIT PROGRAMS: In addition to witnessing the natural magic of the ocean and its inhabitants, each student crew will make friendships to last a lifetime. Campers will take responsibility for themselves and their fellow shipmates, learning to work as a team with others as they hoist and brace the yards on the ship's 130-foot tall rig and apply acquired navigational skills to guide the ship's course on a voyage of discovery.

CAMP FACILITIES: SOAR has two major Base Camp facilities: one in Balsam North Carolina where we have rustic cabins, a dining pavilion, on site showers/bathrooms, high and low ropes course, as well as several gathering campfire locations. CAMP FACILITIES: We have a beautiful open classroom filled with tools, machines and models of science, always ready for our next hands on project or demonstration.

Our classroom is home to a growing array of intriguing specimens, including a large selection of giant geodes and crystals and an extensive children's science library.

Our shortwave cave is one of our most popular features that gives students a visual, tactile and experiential way to discover shortwave and ultraviolet light. This is a prime example of the effortless and fun way that our teaching philosophy encourages children's inquiry and unlimited potential for learning.

We have a riveting menagerie of animals that our friendly team shows you how to care for respectfully, learning about their unique features and their original habitats.

CAMP PROGRAM INFO: Although we are a science camp first, we incorporate so much from the world around us that it would be hard to say what we do not cover. Our amazing classroom hosts many hands on science tools, an animal menagerie, a short wave cave and our own outdoor space.

We spend a lot of time experimenting here. When we are not in the classroom we are taking field adventures in and around the city from urban farms to giant robots to vinyl pressing to behind the scenes ice cream shop. In a typical week we go on 3 field trips and have 2 in class days.

We are a hands on, project based program. We focus on doing, exploring, investigating and learning.

CAMP LEADERSHIP CIT/LIT PROGRAMS: The majority of our camp staff is chosen from graduates of our two year CIT program for students entering 9th and 10th grades. 9th Graders are placed in groups and learn how to manage the campers, the schedule, and the various trials and tribulations of any job. They also take a weekly class with our CIT coordinator. Those CIT's entering 10th grade enjoy added responsibility and leadership opportunities and have a weekly class with the Director of Summer Programs, during which they learn job skills such as resume building, interview skills, and public speaking.

All CIT's receive certifications in CPR, First Aid, and Babysitting through the Red Cross.

CAMP FACILITIES: Our SUNY Purchase College location is a sprawling 500-acre campus located in the heart of beautiful Westchester County. It offers endless acres of playing fields, training areas, and 2 new floodlit turf, football, and baseball fields. As many as six full soccer fields, 12 short-sided fields, and NCAA regulation baseball and softball diamonds are expertly maintained for daily use. Facilities also include 14 newly-surfaced deco tennis courts (6 lighted), 3 full indoor, and 3 outdoor basketball courts.

Campers will also utilize 3 air-conditioned indoor gymnasiums, racquetball and squash courts, training rooms, an Olympic-size indoor swimming pool, a newly-renovated performance center, and a video analysis room.

CAMP LEADERSHIP CIT/LIT PROGRAMS: The Youth Leadership Program (YLP) combines the fun of being a participant with important life skills such as leadership, personal development, teamwork, and communication, all under the watchful eyes of our experienced educators and coaches.

Working with guidance from our camp and program director(s), YLP participants will observe and assist in all aspects of the camp program and daily activities, while receiving performance feedback in a constructive environment, helping to build self-confidence and interpersonal skills.

CAMP FACILITIES: Children live in wood-framed and screened cabins by age group, yet choose activities and wilderness trips individually. We have a wide range of activities in camp, and an extensive wilderness program - hiking, canoeing, kayaking, sailing throughout the Adirondack region.

CAMP PROGRAM INFO: The North Country Camps - Camp Lincoln for Boys and Camp Whippoorwill for Girls - are adventurous and fun full-season resident camps located in the Adirondack region of NY State. We offer a program that emphasizes individual choice, and we offer a wide range of activities in camp including horseback riding, sailing, canoeing, swimming, windsurfing, kayaking, bicycling, soccer, baseball, softball, ultimate frisbee, volleyball, tennis, archery, art, drama, dance, and woodshop.

We also offer an extensive Wilderness Trip program. The trips -day trips, overnights, and 3, 4, 5 day trips - include hiking, backpacking, canoeing, bicycling, riding, and sailing. Campers live in cabin groups of five or six campers with one counselor. Overall camper:counselor ratio is 3:1. Our lifeguards are Red Cross Certified lifeguards and teach Red Cross certified swim lessons.

Our Riding Instructors are all certified instructors, as well as being certified in CPR and first aid by the Red Cross.

CAMP LEADERSHIP CIT/LIT PROGRAMS: Campers age 13-15 participate in our CIT program where they can choose a specialty area in camp and mentor with staff from that area (Ex: Ride staff, lifeguards, counselors etc.) They also go on trips-some of our past trips have included: overnight to Hershey Park, overnight to Six Flags Great Adventure, day trip to the Waterfront Center (sailing and kayaking), day trip to Mountain Creek water park, overnight to Club Getaway, day trip to Brownstone Adventure Park, overnight Camping/White Water Rafting, etc.)

YEAR-ROUND PROGRAMS: Year round ride school with programs for ages 3 and older. Lessons offered include private lessons, group lessons and semi privates. Group lessons are offered full year or seasonally.

CAMP FACILITIES: The 443-acre property boasts beautiful wilderness, an 80-acre private and pristine lake, a mountaintop (Putnam Mountain), miles of mountain streams, an historic iron smelting furnace, and complete camp facilities. Little Notch connects girls of diverse backgrounds with each other, positive mentors, and the land. Guided by their counselors, campers choose from a wide variety of group-planned activities, which allow for skill development and personal challenge in a safe and fun environment. Unless noted, all campers are eligible to participate in these activities, though not all activities are offered every day. Camp activities include swimming, canoeing, kayaking, sailing*, hiking, cookouts, land stewardship, campfires, creek-walking, tie-dyeing, drawing, beading, singing, ropes course, journaling, meditation, overnight camp-outs...and more.

We strive to bring together a diverse staff. They are selected for their strong leadership, problem solving skills, love of working with children, ability to model our mission, and a passion for the outdoors. All applicants are thoroughly screened and participate in comprehensive pre-camp training and orientation. The ratio of counselors to campers is one counselor to every six campers ages 7 and 8, and one counselor to every eight campers age 9 and above. All Camp Little Notch staff are certified in first aid. Waterfront and boating staff are certified lifeguards and ropes course staff are certified in belay. A registered nurse, or other licensed medical professional, oversees the health and safety of campers and staff on site.

OTHER CAMP INFO: Campers start their morning at 7:30 am giving them time to dress and any personal care before going to the dining hall to enjoy breakfast. At all meals, the campers, staff and volunteers work together to set the table, serve the food family style, and end the meal by cleaning and putting away the dishes. After breakfast, "kapers" are next. Kapers are community responsibilities throughout the camp. The campers then enjoy many fun-filled, camper-planned activities. The campers enjoy staying busy throughout the morning with programs such as hiking, boating, swimming, games, and arts & crafts. Lunch is at 12:30 pm, followed by a busy afternoon of more activities and "me-time" (personal time) before dinner at 6:00 pm. CAMP FACILITIES: The New York Kids Club is New York's premier children's enrichment center, renowned for creative and innovative kids classes, day camps, birthday celebrations, and special events! CAMP FACILITIES: Onyahsa is a small camp, with approximately 90 overnight campers and 16 day campers per week. Campers reside in lodges, cabins, or tents depending on age. CAMP PROGRAM INFO: Celebrating its 119th summer in 2017, YMCA Camp Onyahsa offers great experience for youth, teens, families, and adults. Nestled in its own 180-acre wooded bay on Chautauqua Lake, Western New York, it offers organized summer residential and day camp sessions, off-site horseback riding, teen activities, leadership development, and much more. Traditional Camp: This program is designed for youth ages seven to fourteen and all activities are developmentally appropriate. Traditional Camp is the heart of our program, for here are made the special friendships and fond memories, which last a lifetime. It is recommended for both new and veteran campers.

Traditional Camp will be offered during all summer sessions. Campers who attend Traditional Camp will enjoy all the favorite daily activities such as Swimming, Boating, Arts, Sports, Nature, and campers' "Choice." Swimming activities include National YMCA instructional swimming and water safety classes.

Boating generally offers kayaking, sailing, wind surfing, skin diving, fishing, rowing, and canoeing. Arts includes activities such as camp crafts, painting, clay sculpture, drama, and other creative projects. Sports offers a wide range of athletic activities like Soccer, Basketball, Climbing Wall, Archery, Court Games, New Games, and many others. Nature includes Environmental Education and outdoor activities such as hiking, planting, outdoor cooking, conservation, and many others.

Horseback Riding Camp: In addition to Traditional Camp, each week will offer Horseback Riding Camp at a local equestrian center. Campers bunk with other campers in the general program, but focus on horseback riding, (see the annual schedule), for part of the day, thus they will miss some of the Traditional activities described above. This experience especially suits older and veteran campers.

Teen Camp: Each week's fourteen or fifteen year-old campers who are registered for Teen Camp will participate in and help to conduct their own more autonomous and exciting programs such as trip-camping, "extreme team", climbing, sailboat racing, and many other great activities. Teen campers will be able to exercise their independence and responsibility by helping to create their own less-routine programs. They will also complete a Camp project and assist with special events. Our mission is to promote excellence in youth development through quality camp programs that place a premium on participants; safety, health, and happiness in an active outdoor environment.

The Camp Staff is comprised of experienced teachers and college and high school students; many of whom were former Onyahsa campers. All of these highly committed and competent adults are carefully screened, chosen, and trained by the YMCA. The Camp Director has served in this role for over 20 years.

CAMP LEADERSHIP CIT/LIT PROGRAMS: Leadership program. Campers who are fifteen years old (by the start of camp), and who register for a two-week Leader in Training (LIT) session, will have a great time taking trips and participating in more mature projects, while also learning the responsibilities required of leadership. This experience is great for older teens who want both excitement and responsibility, and who are ready to handle more independence.

CAMP PROGRAM INFO: Manice Education Center is an opportunity for campers to explore the environment while growing as leaders. During their 1-3 week experience, students will go on a backpacking and/or canoeing trip focused on learning about ecosystems and themselves. By taking risks and challenging themselves physically and mentally, students leave feeling confident and more connected to their natural surroundings. They will have the chance to swim daily and participate in low ropes course challenges and team building activities.

CAMP PROGRAM INFO: Campers enjoy a balanced schedule that includes group periods and choice periods each day. CAMP FACILITIES: Schodack is nestled in a picturesque wooded valley in the foothills of the Berkshires, our beautiful campus of flat, grassy playing fields is surrounded by acres of our own stunning, private forest. CAMP PROGRAM INFO: The Krouner family has been on this beautiful 100-acre site since 1909 when Sam and Lena Krouner operated a dairy farm, which later became Krouners Hotel. Their son, Lou, and his wife, Clara, converted the hotel into Camp Schodack in 1957; and their son, Paul, and his wife, Linda, became owner/directors in 1970. In 2012, after a lifetime of summers at Schodack, their son Matt became a full-time owner/director…four generations of continuous and dedicated family leadership!

CAMP PROGRAM INFO: Founded in 1980 by Philadelphia Orchestra cellist Bert Phillips and Steinway pianist Toby Blumenthal, Luzerne Music Center aims to provide world-class music instruction for passionate young people in a summer camp environment regardless of their financial circumstance. Musicians ages 9 to 18 come from all over the world to train at LMC's campus located in the foothills of New York’s Adirondack Park.

Since inception, LMC has maintained strong relations with musicians of the Philadelphia Orchestra and New York City Ballet. CAMP FACILITIES: Students will use Hofstra's top-notch facilities, including their Olympic sized pool, while being taught by experts from Nassau BOCES. Time will be split between the classroom and the pool, where students will design and build a Remotely Operated Vehicle (ROV) and learn about methods in underwater archaeology.

CAMP PROGRAM INFO: The course will begin with an introduction to the history of marine exploration. Then, as part of a team, they will design and build an underwater ROV and test their designs in the water. Students will also have the opportunity to work with a marine archaeologist and participate in an antique "helmet dive" in Hofstra's pool.

Camp SAY was established with one goal in mind – to provide children who stutter with a highly immersive and accepting summer camp experience that builds self-confidence and helps children develop the vital communication skills they need to fully express themselves without fear, bullying or ridicule.

Complementing our wide range of exciting traditional camp activities, Camp SAY provides each child with unique experiences that challenge them in a safe way, creating a strong sense of achievement and helping them confidently navigate the unique issues that children who stutter face in the everyday world.

STAFF
The staff is dedicated to creating a safe and accepting environment where every child can find their beautiful and unique voice. Approximately 80% of children return to camp. Parents and campers tell us it’s our staff and unique approach that consistently exceed expectations, making Camp SAY such a rewarding and transformative experience.

We provide an excellent Staff-to-Camper Ratio: With Camp’s leadership team, camp counselors, specialized activities staff and more, our staff-to-camper ratio is 1 staff member for every 2-3 campers. In addition, each bunk is staffed at night with at least 2 counselors for an average of 6-10 campers.

Counselors complete a comprehensive training program to support the social, emotional and physical needs of all our campers. Staff development includes leadership training and extensive information about stuttering, camper health and safety, camp philosophy, policies and procedures and much more. Traveling to Camp SAY: Campers come from all around the country and abroad. We work closely with families to make each child’s trip to Camp SAY as safe and enjoyable as possible. We schedule a chaperoned flight from the southeast to New York City. Children taking individual flights are welcomed at the gate by camp staff. Upon arrival at the airport, camp staff helps navigate baggage claim, arrange check-in for return flights, and board campers on the bus for a fun trip to Camp SAY.

Our Personalized Approach: In order to fully personalize your child’s camp experience, our team obtains detailed preferences in advance of camp from you and your child – from their activities to seemingly small yet important details. For example, children who have birthdays at Camp SAY are celebrated with a group birthday song and birthday cake.

CAMP PROGRAM INFO: The athletic program includes team sports and individual challenges. From basketball, softball, soccer and Frisbee to tennis, archery, biking and yoga, Ramah offers activities for all interests and skill levels. Older campers have the option to compete against other camps in varsity and junior varsity programs. They can improve their skill by learning from experts in our "Coaches-in-Residence" program. Yom Sport provides everyone with a day of friendly competition at all skill levels. We also offer a four day intensive sports clinic.

Ramah Berkshires campers enjoy swimming, boating and water play on beautiful Lake Ellis. The Red Cross certified waterfront staff instructs and guards our daily instructional swim periods, as well as free swim times. For older campers, we offer a lifeguard training certification. Our water trampoline, slide, "blob" and "Summit" add to the fun on the waterfront. Campers enjoy learning to kayak, canoe, and sail on the lake. Older campers have opportunities to participate in overnight boating adventures, as well.

Summer camp is about the great outdoors, and there's plenty of that at Ramah! Our Al Hagova specialists are trained to teach environmental values to campers through overnights and nature walks. Older campers experience multi-day bike trips and hiking trips. Campers of all ages look forward to "flying" through the air on our zip-line, or mastering climbing skills on our rock wall. Groups of campers learn to bond and cooperate while on our ropes course or hiking up Ramah Mountain. Our in-camp mountain bike trail is used by campers of all ages.

Jewish music and dance are keys to our program! Campers learn classic Israeli dances and songs, as well as modern pop tunes. Among the highlights of the summer are the Zimriyah (camp–wide song festival) and Rikudiah (dance festival). Drama specialists offer workshops in dramatic techniques and skills. Many camper edot (divisions) perform a musical play in Hebrew. Interested campers can opt for drama workshops. Those campers who love to sing can be part of our a cappella groups. Our staff and older camper a capella group performs each Friday evening, setting the mood as Camp ushers in Shabbat.

Experienced artists and art teachers transmit their love of arts and crafts and fine art throughout the summer. From painting, sculpting and papier mache to jewelry-making, woodworking and tallit-making, campers are introduced to a wide-range of activities and have the opportunity to hone their skills in areas of special interest. At various times during the summer, visiting artists share their specialties with our campers.

The multi-media center enables campers to explore photography, radio and film-making. Interested campers can improve their photography skills as they document the summer in pictures. They can anchor their own radio show on Camp's radio station, Kol Ramah (Voice of Ramah), that broadcasts throughout Camp. They can even film, direct, edit and produce movies under the guidance of our videography staff.

Interwoven into all aspects of camp life are Conservative Jewish values and Ahavat Yisrael, love of Israel. Campers participate in age-appropriate and meaningful daily prayer. Jewish learning factors into all aspects of the daily schedule, from sportsmanship to the Jewish view of saving the environment.
Integral to the Ramah community is the Mishlachat, educators and support staff from Israel who work in all aspects of camp life. They provide campers with a taste of Israel, exposure to Hebrew language, and an understanding of current events in the Middle East.

CAMP LEADERSHIP CIT/LIT PROGRAMS: Our oldest campers, entering eleventh grade in our Gesher division learn important leadership skills, spending time as counselors in training (CIT) by helping our youngest campers with their daily activities. These campers receive specialized training from the Ramah Staff, as well as on-going instruction from visiting specialists during the summer. This last year, Gesher—meaning bridge—allows these campers to envision themselves as models and leaders to younger campers.

CAMP SCHOLARSHIPS OR FINANCIAL ASSISTANCE: We are committed to ensuring that no eligible camper is turned away due to financial hardship and to providing a Ramah experience for any camper who might not otherwise have been able to become part of our Ramah family. Camp Ramah offers financial assistance to campers and serves the Jewish community in cooperation with local synagogues and schools. The financial assistance process is strictly confidential. YEAR-ROUND PROGRAMS: Camp Ramah in the Berkshires is the ideal location for your group to spend time together in a Jewish environment. YMCA Camp Weona offers both traditional and high adventure activities. Horseback riding through the forest, kayaking under the blue sky, making new friends, singing by the campfire, jumping into the refreshing pool, learning how to set up a campsite, fishing at the lake; each day is full of adventure. YMCA Camp Weona serves children 7 to 17 years old with exciting summer camp options for one, or two or more week stays. All campers live in one of 18 rustic bunk style cabins with shared restrooms facilities. We have a 6:1 camper-to-leader ratio which assures close supervision of all activities. During the summer session a fulltime health officer lives on site and a physician is on call 24 hours a day. CAMP SCHOLARSHIPS OR FINANCIAL ASSISTANCE: At YMCA Camp Weona, we believe that every child should have the chance to experience camp. The YMCA Strong Kids Campaign provides financial assistance to families within our community who are in need of financial support and may not have the ability to pay the full fee. Financial assistance is determined based on a thorough review of an application and a personal interview with the applicant. Assistance will be granted on the basis of financial need resulting from low income, emergency expenses or other circumstances that inhibit an individual’s ability to pay a prescribed fee. As part of our mission, we teach campers responsibility with an opportunity to Earn Their Way to Camp. At YMCA Camp Weona, our rustic cabins provide a home for small groups of no more than 12 campers who live together and attend daily activities as a group. Cabin groups are made up of either boys or girls entering similar grades and registered for the same camp program. Groups of 8-12 campers of similar gender and age attend daily activities together as a cabin with their leaders. The intention is to foster a “family-like” atmosphere within the group. Menu - Our back-to-basics menu is prepared each day in the dining hall. The YMCA offers items that children enjoy in their daily life that help sustain the additional energy needed during long days at camp. Our food service staff prides themselves on the fact that there are no trans fats in our meals. Special consideration is given for children who have allergies or prefer a vegetarian option.

Cabin/Bunk Mates - Campers may request a bunk mate within one school grade of each other, are of the same gender, and are registered for the same program. A bunk mate request is included in the parent pack and must be returned three weeks prior to attendance. Requests made after the three-week deadline may not be honored. In order to promote inclusion within each cabin, only one bunk mate request per child will be honored. (Bunk mates must be reciprocal – ex. John picks Tim and Tim must pick John.) Groups of four or more may be split to promote new camper inclusion.

SUMMER CAMP JOBS:
Our summer camp is only as good as the staff it hires. That is why we search the globe for the most experienced and enthusiastic staff members we can find. From England to Australia and California to Maine, our staff consists of about fifteen different nations and over twenty states. Everyone comes together with one goal in mind; to make sure our campers have the best summer of their lives!

We are looking for general counselors, specialist counselors, leadership positions, and support staff for the upcoming summer. General counselors spend the day with their division of campers; guiding, supporting, and supervising them as they go from activity to activity.

As a specialist, you concentrate on a specific area, passing on your knowledge to our campers to ensure they are learning or mastering that skill. The leadership roles we fill each summer range from department heads and group leaders to medical staff and office assistants. Lastly, our support staff members work behind the scenes as kitchen staff, maintenance workers, groundskeepers, and housekeepers to ensure the day to day operations of camp are handled.

Generally, most of our counselors are aged between nineteen and twenty-five, while our leadership staff are over twenty-five and have worked their way up the camp ladder. For a complete list, view our staff positions.

CAMP FACILITIES: Each camp has its own waterfront with a fleet of canoes, kayaks, rowboats, and paddle boats that offers a wide variety of waterfront activities. CAMP PROGRAM INFO: Pok-O-MacCready Camps is one of the oldest summer camps in the world. In fact, our boys’ camp is the oldest in the United States having been privately owned and operated by the same family since its establishment in 1905. In 1967 our current director, Jack Swan, saw the need for a summer camp for girls and opened Camp MacCready. We are now one big family, combining our names to “Pok-O-MacCready” and operating as a traditional residential Adirondack summer camp for boys and girls ages six to sixteen.

The proximity of our summer camp to the Adirondack Wilderness Park grants us access to more than 6 million acres of woodland, rocks, rivers, lakes, and mountains to explore. Summer camp isn’t just for kids anymore! Want to experience camp for yourself and wrap it up into an inexpensive family vacation? It’s true! Many of our campers choose to stay for all seven weeks of the summer. Staying for the whole season really allows campers to hone their skills in their class areas, go on more wilderness trips, and means they won’t miss out on any of the big summer camp events! In addition, 7-weekers get to enjoy special events in between the 4-week and 3-week session break such as Beach Day and a day trip to the Great Escape amusement park. Some campers choose to register for the first 4 weeks, and then decide later to upgrade to the full 7-week session, and that’s just fine by us. If you’re unsure whether your camper would like to be a 4-weeker or a 7-weeker, don’t worry…it only takes a mouse-click for us to change a 4-weeker to a 7-weeker. Feel free to discuss that option with your child if you think they could benefit from a longer session!

4-WEEK SESSION JULY 1, 2018 – JULY 29, 2019 Standard Rate: $6,400
The first half of the summer consists of our 4-week overnight program. The 4-week session allows campers to learn new skills and take part in a variety of classes. The session includes many themed events which lead up to our “Color Wars”, in which campers don their colors of Red, Yellow, Blue, Black, or Green and see which team will come out on top: these games have been a camper favorite for decades!

For the first two weeks of the 4-Week session, we run a two week “Rookie Camp” for first-time campers between the ages of 6 to 9 years old. We feel this short session is a good bite-sized introduction to summer camp, and also allows campers the flexibility to stay on for the remainder of the 4-week session if they get bitten by the “summer camp bug” and want to stay longer!

3-WEEK SESSION (Overnight) JULY 31, 2018 – AUGUST 18, 2018 Standard Rate: $4,600

The 3-Week session offers two options to campers: a traditional overnight summer camp program, or a day-camp option. The 3-Week session is full of fun classes Mondays – Fridays, with special events planned on the weekends. It’s also the session in which our famous GREEK GAMES take place, as well as some of our campers’ all-time favorite camp events like the “Pok-O-Palooza” music festival, the Jack’s Cup sailing race, Casino Night, and the Pok-O County Fair.

3-WEEK SESSION (Day Camp)* JULY 21, 2018 – AUGUST 18, 2018 Standard Rate: $2,100 for a first-time camper.

Our day campers attend camp from approximately 9am to about 5pm Mondays through Fridays. Just like overnight campers, they get to create their own class schedule from a list of over 30 program offerings. They are, of course, assigned to a cabin and counselor and have their own bunks so they have a comfortable spot to relax during Rest Hour. Day campers also have the option of staying the night for an evening activity or program if they wish, and we can easily make those arrangements, although a small fee may apply. They also have the added bonus of being able to stay overnight the last week of camp for no additional fee!

CAMP FACILITIES: Our classes are taught in our three lovely professional dance studios. We have numerous fields for athletic activities. Girls live in 7 bunks with bathrooms and showers inside, two counselors in each bunk with 8-10 girls. Beautiful Adirondack style Lodge and clubhouse.

Upon completion of the CIT program, you will be eligible to work at Woodmont in some capacity which will be determined at the beginning of our hiring season. A weekly out of camp trip is also included in the program.

CAMP FACILITIES: We have a lake, three swimming pools, large ball fields, a garden and a farm, a playground and separate courts for tennis, basketball, street hockey and volley ball. Our Outdoor Adventure program has special locations for climbing walls, obstacle/rope courses and zip lines. We have a series of individual workshops and studios for dance, music, theater, ceramics, wood, graphics, sculpture, photography, weaving and art.

These provide the opportunity for every child to discover the special satisfactions of creativity. There is a fully equipped indoor gymnastics center and a fencing shed. CAMP FACILITIES: Surprise Lake Camp is blessed with incredible natural beauty. Our camp sits on 500 beautiful wooded acres surrounded by an enormous expanse of undeveloped state parkland. Our sparkling, 30-acre lake is nestled between two rugged mountain ridges. It creates a vision of rustic beauty that dances in the heads of visitors years after they've been to camp. Additionally, we have miles and miles of gorgeous hiking trails with breathtaking views of the Hudson River, and beautiful campsites for cookouts and overnights. CAMP PROGRAM INFO: Surprise Lake Camp has a rich history. It was founded in 1902 by the Educational Alliance to provide a summer vacation for Jewish boys from Main Building - 1920 the tenements of Manhattan's Lower East Side. In its first season, it had six tents for 25 campers and five counselors. One of the first campers was Eddie Cantor, who, upon achieving success as an entertainer, became one of the camp's most ardent supporters. Since then Surprise Lake Camp has served thousands of young people, many of whom have achieved prominence, among them, entertainer Neil Diamond, talk show host Larry King, actor Jerry Stiller, and former New York Attorney General Robert Abrams.

In 1911, the 92nd Street Y became partners in running the camp, and the camp office was located at the Y for many years. In 1917, when the Federation of Jewish Philanthropies was created, Surprise Lake Camp was one of the initial member agencies. The camp then became incorporated as a New York not-for-profit in 1920, eventually leading to complete independence from its founding agencies. Over the years, Surprise Lake Camp has been substantially rebuilt three times. In addition, its clientele and program have evolved as the Jewish community has changed. Originally established to provide summer vacations in the country for poor boys from the lower East Side, the camp has also gone through periods when it was dedicated to feeding undernourished boys, operated as a year-round camp which included formal education during the winter, committed to the personal development of children using a social group work model, and run as a general co-ed summer camp with special emphasis on scholarships.

OTHER CAMP INFO: Surprise Lake Camp boasts one of the most beautiful sites in the country, one of the most reputable programs, and a large, well-trained, caring staff. Many facilities, like our theater and gymnasium, are among the finest that you will find anywhere. But Surprise Lake Camp does not try to be like an exotic theme park, full of bright lights and glitter. We don't emphasize material things because we believe that the true magic of camping is rooted in intangibles like the beauty of nature, the guidance of a highly trained staff, and helping children to grow into well-rounded adults. Camp is a supportive, caring community with an upbeat Jewish flavor. We sing a lot and we cheer a lot, and we make the most of the unique opportunity camp affords to create a model of the world as it should be�joyous and at peace, achieving the human potential for successful group living.

CAMP FACILITIES: Our facility is adjacent to several parks and other cultural attractions. We take full advantage of our immediate surroundings as well as trips into Manhattan and Long Island. We swim at least twice weekly at a local outdoor pool.

CAMP PROGRAM INFO: Campers engage in a daily sports, dance once a week, swimming twice weekly, and a number of exciting weekly field trips in and around NYC. Campers also create a 3D animated movie of their camp experience. Field trips include Yankee Stadium, a Broadway Show, Botanical Gardens, Central Park Zoo, Long Island Aquarium, and more!!

CAMP SESSION DATES & FEES:
July 5 thru September 2. Our hours are 8AM to 7PM. Summer camp cost is $375 per week. Register before April 15 and price is $300 per week. Register after April 15 but before May 15 and cost is $325 per week. After May 15 cost is $375. Pricing includes breakfast, snack and lunch twice a week. Some trips are extra fees.

CAMP PROGRAM INFO: Summer Program participants can be day students or live on campus and enjoy a full schedule that provides recreational activities on weekends and afternoons. Since 1990, the Summer Program has successfully combined not only academic enrichment and remediation, but also new experiences, opportunities and fun.

Admissions: The Gow School has a rolling admissions policy for its Summer Program. Personal interviews and tours of the campus are given throughout the year. Academics: The Gow School Summer Academic Program is a challenging and stimulating learning environment which provides students the opportunity to improve their academic skills. With an average class size of five students and individual attention from teachers, students achieve success in areas they never thought possible. Teachers use multi-sensory teaching strategies to reach students with different learning styles.

Classes such as Reconstructive Language and The Writing Process enable students to develop and enhance their language and writing skills, while courses such as Studio Art, Videography, and Metal Technology provide a chance to express creativity. Students may sign-up for four different classes during the morning academic session. Individual afternoon tutorial sessions are available for an added fee.

Florida Film Academy at Gow: During the Summer of 2015, The Gow School is pleased to offer a special afternoon Videography course presented by The Florida Film Academy. Classes will run from Monday, July 15th through Friday, July 19th from 2-5 pm.

Afternoon Activities: Each afternoon, Summer Program students participate in three Activity Instructional Clinics (AICs). AICs help students learn new skills and enjoy a full summer experience. During activity sessions, students are encouraged to participate to their level of comfort. Character building and teamwork abilities are emphasized. The AICs include traditional athletic activities such as basketball and capture the flag, along with non-traditional sports such as crab soccer and tennis softball. Other activities may include arts & crafts, hiking and biking. Specialized sessions such as archery and the low ropes courses are coached by trained supervisors.

Weekend Trips: Weekend trips are one of the many highlights of The Gow School Summer Program. Three overnight excursions are taken during the summer. These trips are not only fun and exciting, but also culturally and educationally rewarding. Experiences take advantage of local attractions, and range from camping trips to resort locations to museums and amusement parks.

CAMP SESSION DATES & FEES:
July 1, 2018-August 4, 2018 Tuition for the 2018 Gow School Summer Program is $7,800 for residential students. This includes the cost of instruction, lodging in dormitories, meals, transportation, day trips and weekend excursions. Tuition for day students who attend only academic sessions (8 AM - 1 PM) is $4,600. Tuition for day students who attend both academic sessions and afternoon activities (8 AM - 5 PM) is $5,400.
